The 9th Conference on Information Science and Information Literacy

Sibiu, 19-20 April 2018

The 9th Conference on Information Science and Information Literacy was organized by The Library of „Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu (LBUS), in partnership with University Library of Bayreuth, Evangelische Akademie Siebenburgen, The Faculty of Letters and Arts, The Engineering Faculty - Computer Science and Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, with the support of Romanian Library Association.

Our special thanks go to Mr. Sorin Rotariu, general manager of VISMA, for giving us his support this year also.

The keynote speaker was Célia Sousa Vieira,  an assistant professor at Instituto Universitário da Maia (ISMAI), a researcher at CIAC (Center for Research in Arts and Communication) and director of the Center of research for Intermediality studies and technologies of ISMAI. She has specialized in the field of comparative literature and has several publications in the fields of comparative and intermediality studies, narratology, Portuguese literature and digital humanities.  Her presentation revealed details about  Digital epistolary libraries: the digital edition of Emile Zola’s correspondence, and gave the participants the opportunity to exchange ideas about digital repositories, copyright issues and content management.

The chairman of the conference was Dr. Gudrun-Liane ITTU,  researcherand author of many books and articles in the fields of sociology and culture.
Our guest from Finland, Arja Ellen Mäntykangas (lecturer, Ph.D., Swedish School of Library and Information Science) – presented her research on Challenges in creating a theoretical framework for library management in Finland, Romania and Sweden, developed as a Ph.D. student at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu.

We also received contributions from Vitebsk State P.M. Masherov University, Republic of Belarus,  about The main directions for creating a repository in the institution of higher education of the Republic of Belarus and formation of information competence in the conditions of library educational environment.
Ms. Cristina Ioana ROIU - Europeana Network Councillor, Romanian Academy Library, Bucharest  - talked about measuring the impact of cultural activities in Europeana's way and building communities and - a key point of GLAMs strategy in the 21st Century.
During the conference, the Europeana Local Communities Task Force was launched, based on the desire for permanent interaction between Europeana, the ENA Council and different communities of interests under the slogan Building Communities.

We had contributions from the University of Bucharest regarding top Romanian Academic Journals and Their Open Access Policies, from Dr.Robert Coravu and Drd. Mihai Constantinescu, who are also active members in the Information Literacy Section of the Romanian Library Association.
The workshop Open Science and research data management was developed by Nicolaie CONSTANTINESCU (, Information architect), who gave us a grasp of the implementation roadmap for the European Open Science Cloud.
Another workshop was developed by Ioana Narcisa CREŢU and Cristina PÂRVU (LBUS - Faculty of Social and Human Sciences and Faculty of Letters and Arts) and it involved how to effectively engage the users of the library in a positive dialogue.
Dr. Cristina ALBU (Library Director, University Politehnica of Bucharest)  showed us the latest conclusions of her study about reducing the distance between the academic library and its users by applying innovative management tools.
We also had contributions about the digitization of the books in Romania with  challenges and achievements, presented by  Ana Maria ROMAN-NEGOI from “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia, Department of History, Archeology and Museology ).
András Bándi, from The Library of the Cultural Dialogue Center "Friedrich Teutsch", Sibiu spoke about  Historical Book Catalogs in the Central Archive of the Evangelical Church A. B. in Romania - The Miles Fragment .

The group of participants from Faculty of Science - LBUS (Dana SIMIAN, Florentin BOTA, Bota Petrică, Săndică Robert, Darius Haţegan), brought novelties about: using intelligent systems to promote e-libraries on social media, mobile applications in the libraries activity, digital augmentation of a photo library.
The papers from Computer Science and Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department – LBUS were centered in the following main areas The Wisdom of Crowds: dialectical bootstrapping with applications for acquiring knowledge (Daniel VOLOVICI ), - Improving the Web search using search engines query modifiers (Radu G. CREŢULESCU, Daniel I. MORARIU, Macarie BREAZU) , and Anomaly detection on the real production traffic (Claudia Cîrcioroabă, Mihai Stancu, Daniel I. MORARIU)  
The presentations from LBUS Library were focused on announcing the results of the projects developed by the library: The cultural project The picture of an epoch: 1854-1948. Photographic studios in Sibiu (Mihaela Antofie, Rodica Volovici, Constantin Ittu, Gudrun Liane Ittu, Elena Marginean, Camelia Volosciuc, Liliana Oprescu, Cristina Pârvu, Ioan Vişa). Another concern was in showing the considerations on Service Quality in a Modern Library and on the Impact on Supporting Education and Research, presented by Elena Mărginean.
All the presentations were followed by feedback and Q&A sessions, and all the participants had the possibility to exchange ideas and make new connections and start collaboration projects.
